Tomb Raider Fantasy Casting

The video game reboot of Tomb Raider has caught the eye of Hollywood with a new movie adaptation. So the question is, who would you cast as Lara Croft?

The word is that the critically acclaimed but not quite so financially successful Tomb Raider video game is definitely moving ahead with a movie backed by MGM and GK Films.

In some equally awesome news, it was recently announced that Marti Noxon was brought on board to re-write the script for the movie. If you didn’t know it, Marti Noxon is a veteran writer and producer of amazing titles ranging from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer to Mad Men and all the way to Glee. In a perfect world I hope they also reach out to Rhianna Pratchett to help write the script. Pratchett did an amazing job writing the Tomb Raider video game and I hope they keep some of her amazing story in the movie.

So now that we know there’s a Tomb Raider movie moving forward, the next obvious question is… who will be the new Lara Croft? The producers have already confirmed that this is going to focus on the early days of Lara Croft so there’s not going to be any Angelina Jolie. While I love Angelina in a lot of things I definitely think it’s time for this movie to find a new talent to bring a more realistic Lara Croft to life.

So we talked about it… over games. Now we want to hear what you think. Who would you cast in a Tomb Raider reboot. Let us know in the comments and let’s talk about it. We may even put up a gallery.

True Blood Recap – Who Are You, Really? *SPOILERS*

True Blood kicks off its new season with a premiere that felt more like a trailer than anything else. But we still get to see Billith!

This recap is brought to you by a Spur’s games full of Saint Arnold’s Hefeweizen and Blue Moon and a bunch of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups miniatures and non-stop horn blowing outside my window in downtown San Antonio after the Spur’s win! WOO HOO!!!

Laissez les bons temp rouler! It’s time to meet Billith! SPOILERS!

It could have been my extremely divided attention – seriously the horns went on for hours – or maybe I needed a two-hour premiere to catch up with everyone, but I was less than impressed with this episode. We barely touched on each character to the point that it felt like a one hour trailer. On a positive note there were plenty of Jason, Pam, and Lafayette one-liners. Yes, I have read all the books, but don’t worry – I stopped saying “That’s not what happened in the book” seasons ago… We are way past trying to compare two very different stories.

We pick up right where we left off and everyone is trying to get out of the Authority HQ. Eric and Sookie are running and Sookie does a face plant into some dead vampire goo. Nora and Jason lead Pam, Jessica, and Tara out with a few squabbles over who’s in charge between Jason and Nora. And Sam, Luna, and Emma manage to escape just as Luna collapses and dies. Poor Sam… Just when he finds a nice girl and almost dies for her, she dies.

Next thing we know a gas pipe breaks and ignites – BOOM! (I don’t think that pipe was up to code, just saying…) Sookie freaks out and asks Eric about Bill. A figure emerges from the fire. Sookie asks if it’s Bill. Eric responds “Not anymore” and Billith flies off (as Jason put it) like a naked, evil Superman.

This is war! The Louisiana governor gives a press conference swearing an oath to protect the people of this state, not the vampires. Louisiana has always been welcoming to the vampires and because of that the shortage of True Blood has affected them the most. He is implementing a vampire curfew at sundown and shutting down all vampire-owned businesses. Yeah – that’ll work. He does have plans to help the True Blood people get back in business, not because he cares about the welfare of vampires, but because he needs them to be good tax-paying citizens again and increase his revenues.

Eric and Sookie meet up with Jason and crew head back to Bon Temp with lots of arguing in the back seat. Eric does something most parents only threaten to do and actually pulls the car over. Everyone gets out to discuss/argue/threaten each other. Eric pulls Nora aside to ask what she knows from the book of Lilith and how they can kill Billith. Jessica overhears this and isn’t too happy. Sookie tells Jessica that she loves him too, he was her first everything, but Bill doesn’t exist anymore and they have to let him go.

Jason jumps in to the conversation and argues with Nora about Warlow. Nora is shocked he knows anything about Warlow and tries to glamor him to find out what he knows. He shakes her off and yells that vampires murdered his parents and ruined his life. He is sick of them “brain raping” him and he wishes they never laid eyes on him. We find out that Warlow is actually Lillith’s progeny. Hmmmm…. Jason threatens to shoot Nora when Sookie steps between them. Jason is heartbroken thinking her sister loves the vampires more than him.

Suddenly Jessica feels Bill summoning her and she can’t control herself from walking in his direction. Eric tries to stop her and she spits out blood and pukes all over him. She screams that his fist is squeezing her heart. Sookie says she’s taking her to Bill with or without them and she takes off in the car.

Oh yeah…. There are werewolves.

Alcide and his father watch as some wolves rip apart some people (the old pack leader? I can barely remember last season….) Someone tells him the only way to be packmaster is to inherit the flesh and someone hands him and arm, yes, an arm. Ick. I expected him to change into wolf form and chow down, but no, human Alcide takes a bite. The naked woman who gave him the arm said he is glad to serve him anyway she can. They all wolf-out and do wolf things. Not gonna lie – every time I see Joe Manganiello in the Magnum commercial I expect him to wolf-out when he realizes he broke in to steal ice cream. And Magic Mike… yeah.

Comic relief time! Next we see Andy sitting outside his house ignoring the cries of his litter of fairy babies. Arlene comes out and yells at him that he cannot expect them to take care of his alien babies without him. He confesses he doesn’t know how to take care of his own babies – he hasn’t taken a poop class or anything. She tells him he looks scared out of his wits which is how any good parent should be. Next thing we know Arlene and Terry are giving him a diaper-changing lesson while each holding at least one baby. Andy seems very proud of himself. He looks at the freshly changed baby and introduces himself – “Hi. I’m Sheriff Andy Bellefleur and I’m gonna be your daddy.”

Not that he’ll need to worry about diapers for long…these are magic fairy babies! Andy takes a nap and they have all aged about 4 years and are happy to see their daddy awake! Awesome.

Back at Merlotte’s, Sam walks in carrying a sleeping Emma and lays her in a booth. He hears noise in the kitchen and grabs a pool cue. Lafayette comes out holding a gun and tells Sam he is holding down the fort after what he saw on TV with Luna/Steve Newlin. He said that was some of the sickest sh*# he’s seen on TV and he watches Dance Moms. (Thank you)

Back to the vampires… after Sookie took off with Jessica in the car, the rest of the vampires left in their vampire ways leaving Jason to hitchhike his way home. A creepy, horror movie station wagon stops and the door opens by itself – another reason to NOT get in. An old guy in the driver’s seat asks if he needs help and tells Jason to get in. Jason asks where he’s from and the old man tells him he had family in Bon Temp but they’re mostly gone now. Jason tells him he’s from Bon Temp and most of his family is gone now and he continues to tell him his life story and how he came to be walking down the road… Oh Jason.

Sookie and Jess pull up to Billith’s house. Jessica is still sick and Sookie helps her inside. They follow bloody footprints to more puddles of bloody vampire goo and are unsure of what they will find until they walk out on the back porch and find a fully dressed and perfectly clean Billith sitting in a rocking chair.

Sookie looks terrified and Jessica doesn’t know what to think. He tells them he just wants to talk. Nora and Eric fly in and instantly they fight. Billith throws Nora across the porch and grabs Eric by the neck. Clearly he is no match for Billith and out of nowhere Sookie stakes Bill. No dead vampire goo! Billith looks down at the stake in his chest, drops Eric, pulls the stake out, and asks “Now can we talk? I am no monster. I am Bill Compton but clearly I am something more.” Sookie tries to get Jessica to leave with her, but she refuses. She tells Sookie that she thought Sookie loved Bill but she just tried to kill him. Ya know… if my vampire dad was the most powerful vampire I’d ever seen, I’d probably stay too.

Next scene – Alcide’s butt + naked woman + naked jealous woman. Alcide makes out with the woman who handed him the arm earlier when his girlfriend walks up to remind him she is his #1 bitch. (sorry about the lack of names – remember… Spurs game, beer, more beer…) Makeup makeout session begins as the other woman walks away. Alcide’s girlfriend turns to her and asks “Where do you think you’re going?” Yep. Wolf threesome.

At Fangtasia, Tara tries to convince Pam to forget about Eric. She doesn’t need him anymore, she has her now. Pam informs her she has been with Eric 100 years and has no intention of walking away from him. There is a knock at the front door and men with guns swarm in looking for Pam. They are here to enforce the new anti-vampire laws and shut down Fangtasia. Tara is her normal self and gets hostile resulting in getting herself shot.

Back at Sookie’s house Eric thanks her for staking Bill. He asks for pen and paper, stabs himself in the arm with the pen, and writes a letter in blood giving Sookie her house back. I’m betting there was ink in that pen – just saying…

She rescinds his invitation to her house and through the front door she tells him she wants her life back.

Nora waits on the front porch and they discuss how to find Billith’s weakness. Nora suggests using Sookie’s fairy powers, but Eric says no. She tells him they may not know Bill’s weakness, but she know’s Eric’s. She tells him he is in love with Sookie.

Bill brings Jessica some True Blood like a good father (Happy Father’s Day!). He sets it on the nightstand but it falls off. Billith freezes it in mid-air and it floats back up on table. Jessica asks him if he knew he could do that and he tells her he has powers he doesn’t understand. He asks for her help to keep him in check.

Back in the creepy station wagon Jason is still explaining himself to the stranger. He tells him “ I see dead people. It’s ok I don’t see all dead people just my parents, and they’ve gotten kinda racist and scary. Any way my sister… and then who would help protect her from Warlow?” The stranger replies that he can’t protect Sookie from Warlow. A wide-eyed Jason asks how he knew Sookie’s name to which the stranger replies “Who do you think I am?” Jason shoots but he disappears in a puff of smoke.

Back at the Compton mansion, Bill is seeing things and hearing voices. He follows the voices into his office where he sees three bloody Lilliths. They all rush towards him at vampire speed and enter his body as if he wasn’t already possessed by Lillith? I guess he just tripled his Lillith powers?

In case you didn’t know, Rooster Teeth is the great group of people that bring you amazing shows like Red vs Blue, Immersion, and the upcoming RWBY. They even have their own convention in Austin and this year will be their 3rd annual RTX on July 5-7th. And what makes RTX even cooler? Kelli Nova is going to be there and she’s going to cosplay.

Earlier in the year, Kelli had planned on debuting her Tal’Zorah cosplay at RTX. The once we got into the build we all quickly realized that was going to be tough. There’s some great progress being made on the costume but it’s just not quite ready yet. There’s still a lot of work to do on the helmet and construction and it’s just going to take more than the few weeks before RTX.

Never fear. Always one to adapt, Kelli Nova is busting out a new cosplay that she’ll have ready in time for RTX: Lara Croft. She’s already just about got the clothes ready and she’ll be building props over the next few weeks until RTX is upon us.

So if you’re coming out to RTX this year, make sure to look for us and say hi. We’ll be wandering around the floor shooting videos and looking at games. Until then, take a look at how things are going on Kelli’s new Lara Croft cosplay.

Sometimes there are books that land in your lap at just the right time. Time being the operative word since that’s a big part of the story.

For Danni, Astro City is that book. With stunning artwork and a powerful story, it’s definitely one you should pick up.

Warehouse 13 Recap – “Runaway” *Spoilers*

This week’s Warehouse 13 episode was suspenseful but still charmingly goofy. There were a few darker-than-usual moments nicely balanced with Pete doing the robot and finding the gay version of himself (not at the same time).

Pete, Myka, and Jinks are called to an Arkansas state prison after a hole is melted in the rock wall of the prison yard. All the prisoners in the yard are accounted for so duh… it was a distraction for the real prison break on the other side of the facility through another melted hole in a wall. While the team is hunting down the lava-spewing artifact, the US Marshals are called in to search for the escapees. Cue Pete quoting Tommy Lee Jones. Well… the marshal looks nothing like Tommy Lee Jones. In fact, he looks like a Ken-doll version of Pete and he finishes Pete’s quote – even better. Oh yeah… and his name is Liam and he’s Jinks’ ex.

The escapees have gang affiliations and everyone assumes they are going after some money they hid before going to prison. Not quite. They did go to the site of the buried money, but when Liam and Myka arrived at the site they found the money, one of the escapees buried in lava, his freaked out girlfriend trapped in their truck by melted doors, and volcanic ash falling from the sky. If our remaining escaped convict isn’t after money, what is he doing?

They follow his trail of destruction to the town diner where they find another body buried under lava. Sticking out of the pile of lava is an arm with the same gang tattoo as the last victim. A clue! After questioning several witnesses they find out their escapee was asking around the restaurant for someone named “Chris”. While Pete is distracted by diner food, Myka finds out that he was really asking for Christina, a former waitress. They leave to question her while Jinks and Liam ride together to check out the gang’s hideout (awkward…)

At first Christina denies knowing anything, Myka finds volcanic ash at Christina’s house and spots obvious signs that she has a teenage boy – dirty clothes and a familiar gang sign scribbled on a notebook. They put two and two together and realize the boy, Kyle, is the escapee’s son.

Meanwhile, Liam and Pete argue on the way to the hideout about how things ended between them. While it was pretty superficial, it was nice to get a little more of Jinks’ story. Apparently Jinks felt like he was catching Liam in several lies and Liam didn’t like the scrutiny of being in a relationship with Jinks, the human lie detector, and not being able to not tell him his cooking wasn’t great or that his favorite tea smells like cat pee (what kind of tea smells like cat pee??) They agree there was plenty of love in the relationship, but they didn’t always like each other.

At the gang hideout they don’t find anyone but do find a list of dates & times and locations and realize it is for an armored truck. The gang is hitting the truck and they know where they will be!

In a parking garage we see the gang about to initiate Christina’s son into their gang. The armored truck driver is beat up and kneeling in front of them. The leader of the gang hands Christina’s son a gun and tells him to kill the driver if he wants in the gang. Jinks and Liam come out of the shadows with guns drawn only to have the rest of the gang members pull their guns and fire at them. Out of nowhere the escaped convict appears with the artifact, a brass jug from Pompeii that belonged to a survivor of the Vesuvius eruption.

He tells Kyle to walk away and we get the typical “So now you’re gonna be a dad” attitude from all teenagers on TV whose fathers have been in prison. The gang leader pulls his own gun on Kyle and the escaped convict answers back by opening the jug and releasing a steady flow of lava shooting out towards the gang. The guard manages to scramble away and father and son run in the opposite direction. The gang leader takes a shot at the son but the father jumps in front and takes the bullet in the shoulder.

This causes the still open jug to fly out of his hand and the lava continues to flow. The gang members are slow to move and get swallowed up by the lava, tires of every car in the garage pop as the hot lava spreads into a giant pool. The escapee and his son cling onto a metal ladder hanging just above the rising lava while Pete & Myka and Liam & Jinks try to get to the artifact on the other side of the lava. Jumping from car roof to car roof and surfing across the garage, Pete and Myka manage to get to the artifact and bag it just as the escapee slips off the ladder landing on the suddenly cooled and hardened lava. Once again… down to the last second.

And where have Claudia and Artie been this whole time you ask?? Well, Artie began the episode preparing for Claudia’s 21st birthday by gathering some party-perfect artifacts. Unfortunately as he was reaching for Jerry Garcia’s black light he knocks some super bouncy ball off its pedestal and it ricochets between Artie’s head and what turns out to be Beethoven’s clock a few times before Artie catches it. Artie begins to hear all of Beethoven’s work in his head getting louder and louder and moving towards the end of Beethoven’s career when he went deaf. The clock is in the warehouse – they can just neutralize it, right? Wrong… they only have half the artifact. They are missing a marble statue that should be on top of the clock. Claudia does her internet-2013-warehouse magic and tracks down the statue to a gallery in Boston. Claudia is having more and more trouble with Artie as he can’t hear things like when he sets off alarms or inadvertently plays the piano or when the guy who is helping them track the statue decides not to help and runs off with the artifact. Fortunately, unlike his t-shirt says, he is an idiot and instead of running outside where you could actually get away, he runs upstairs and down a hallway in his aunt’s house where every door is locked. Just as Artie is getting a bad case of tinnitus and is at the last stage before he goes deaf Claudia manages to bag the statue… yea!

Back in South Dakota the gang is all together at a local bar celebrating Claudia’s birthday complete with cake and gifts. She tries to get dirt on Jinks and his ex when Artie announces it’s time for his surprise! Terrified he still sees her as a child and got her a clown, Claudia looks towards the stage where she is pleasantly surprised to hear the introduction of Runway, Cherie Currie! (Yep. That’s where the name of the episode comes from…) She calls Claudia up on stage, hands her a guitar, and the two perform a pretty good version of “Cherry Bomb” complete with Pete dancing the robot. Turns out Artie saved Cherie from an artifact back in 1979 and she owed him a favor… Maybe Artie is cooler than we thought?

Game of Thrones Recap – “Mhysa” *SPOILERS*

How do you top last week’s brilliant, disturbing, and memorable episode featuring the Red Wedding? You don’t, but it’s still a great episode.

It’s not a surprise to me that this weeks season finale of Game of Thrones isn’t quite as powerful as last week’s. Every story needs a break to gather themselves up from all the insanity that the story puts them through. This episode was the chance for Game of Thrones to do a little housekeeping and get things in order for next season. So while it may not have made for a memorable episode, it definitely had some brilliant moments.

My biggest complaint in this episode was that there was just a little too much going on. We visited virtually every corner of Westeros to catch up on every major character. That’s not a bad thing at all. It just made the episode feel rushed at times. But let’s dive in for a quick recap.

SPOILERS AHEAD! Please keep any comments to the TV show and not the book.

We start the episode at the end of the Red Wedding with Roose Bolton looking over the slaughter of the Stark army. The Hound keeps Arya close and tries to ride through only to hear chants from behind. Frey’s men have beheaded Robb and his dire wolf Grey Wind. Then they sewed Grey Wind’s head on Robb’s body. Arya looks dead inside as she sees it and The Hound quickly turns and heads away from the massacre.

Moving up north with the Bran Bunch, our intrepid band of wanderers take shelter in an abandoned keep. Bran tells some scary story about a man who the gods turned to a rat for harming someone who was his guest. Bran doesn’t know about Robb yet, but that sounds like a lot of foreshadowing for our great friend and general piece of crap Walder Frey, who sits in The Twins gloating with Roose Bolton about their move. They both talk about how arrogant Robb was by not listening to Bolton’s advice and looking down on Frey, all the while acting like the most pompous people in Westeros. Bad things will come to these two. I feel it. At least bad things better come to these two because they deserve it.

Back to the Bran Bunch. While sleeping in their abandoned keep and listening to scary stories, they’re awakened by strange noises coming from an old sally port or well or something that I can’t quite figure out. A huge hairy figure rises up and promptly falls on its face because it’s Sam with Gilly close behind. He convinces them he’s not dangerous and quickly realizes that the dark hair, dire wolf, and lack of walking means that he’s found Bran. He pledges to help them because Jon Snow helped him so much.

So Bran tells him to take him north of the wall, at which point Sam politely says, “Or not.” Sam tells them all about the things they saw and gives them the dragon glass they found since it’s the only way they can really protect themselves. With a quick goodbye, the Bran Bunch leaves to cross the wall while Sam and Gilly head to Castle Black.

Not too far off, Jon Snow stops to get some water and tend to his scarred face. He looks up to face a lone Ygritte with her bow drawn. She looks so heartbroken at what Jon Snow did. He reasons with her and reminds her that deep down she always knew he wasn’t one of them. But that didn’t stop him from loving her. And it didn’t stop her from loving him. That part just about make her break down but she just pulled her bow tighter. Jon Snow said he knew she wouldn’t shoot him which gave her one last chance to say it. “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” At which point she shot him.

He rushes to his horse but not before getting a couple more arrows lodged in him and races away, leaving a tear-streaked Ygritte watching him ride away.

Later on, Sam and Gilly arrive at Castle Black and let Maester Aemon know everything they saw. After Aemon quizzed Sam about whether or not Gilly’s baby was his, he finally concedes and lets her stay as their guest. Aemon tells Sam to start writing. And don’t forget to feed the ravens. They’re all going to be flying tonight because it’s time for the Night’s Watch to let Westeros know that the White Walkers are marching south.

And even more later, Jon Snow’s horse shows up at Castle Black with Jon’s body slumped over. They bring him in and find out he’s alive. They rush him inside where they can take care of him and finally someone in the Stark family doesn’t die in combat.

Speaking of the Starks, Arya and the Hound continue their trek to…. somewhere? They pass by four of Frey’s men boasting about the slaughter. One in particular catches Arya’s ear when he claims to be one of the men that sewed Grey Wind’s head to Robb’s body. She slides away from The Hound and walks up behind the men.

She gives them a sad story about how she wants to stay warm with some food and finally offers them a very valuable coin if they’ll let her. She show’s them the coin given to her by Jaqen H’ghar, which at least gets his attention. When she “drops” it, the Frey soldier reaches down to get when Arya pulls out a knife and promptly and repeatedly stabs him the neck. The other Frey soldiers jump to the ready but are quickly dispatched by The Hound.

Arya stares at the first man she’s ever killed and The Hound can tell. His only advice to her is to let him know the next time she does something like that. Arya recovers her coin and remembers, “Valar Morghulis.”

Sticking with the Starks just a little longer, we finally learn that Theon Greyjoy’s tormentor is none other than the bastard son of Roose Bolton. There’s a very disturbing scene of Ramsay Bolton talking about Theon’s recently amputated cock while eating sausage. Let’s get it out of the way right now. Ramsay Bolton is insane. He also forced Theon to answer to a new name, Reek.

We find out that Ramsay has sent that little bit of Theon to the Greyjoys as a warning to leave the north or the would keep sending pieces of Theon back in small boxes. Lord Balon Greyjoy refuses to give up the lands they’ve occupied for someone he doesn’t even consider a man any more. Fortunately for Theon, his sister Yara refuses to give up her little brother and takes 50 of the fiercest fighters on the fastest ship they can find to go rescue Theon.

Back at Storm’s End with the Baratheons, Ser Davos’ reading improves and he bonds with Gendry, who’s still locked in the dungeon waiting to be sacrificed. While reading some of the messages that have come in for Stannis he grabs the one from the Night’s Watch. His face falls just as he hears bells ring out across the castle.

Ser Davos rushes to find Stannis with Melisandre. They tell him that Robb Stark is dead and Melisandre gloats while insisting she’s not taking credit. Davos tries to convince them to not sacrifice Gendry because even if it was magic that killed Robb Stark, kingdoms united with blood magic are bad. They ignore him, at which point Davos promptly helps Gendry escape.

Stannis and Melisandre aren’t too happy with Davos and Stannis sentences him to death. But before they can haul him away, Davos makes his final counsel as Hand of the King and tells him he shouldn’t be executed because Stannis needs him. Davos hands Stannis the missive from the Night’s Watch at which point Melisandre even agrees (after reading the fire of course) that the real war is going to be north and that they do need Ser Davos to help raise an army to fight. Ser Davos lives to fight another day.

Back in King’s Landing, Sansa and Tyrion seem to be getting along better. They even joke with each other about ways to get back at people that laugh at Tyrion. Of course it’s super awkward since Shae is always a few steps behind them as Sansa’s hand-maiden. Right about then Tyrion is called to an emergency meeting of the Small Council.

Tyrion shows up to see Joffrey a little too happy with himself. That’s never a good thing. They’ve just received word that Robb Stark is dead. Of course Joffrey’s first thought is to have Robb’s head sent to him immediately so he could serve it to Sansa at his wedding feast. Sick, twisted, jerk.

Of course this infuriates Tyrion who reminds Joffrey Sansa is no longer his to torment. At which point the petulant Joffrey insists that everyone is his to torment. This leads to one of the best and most understated scenes of the season. Tyrion covertly threatens Joffrey which leads Joffrey to directly threaten Tyrion. Everyone knows that Joffrey is insane but can’t really say anything to him. So Tywin temporarily defuses the situation by telling everyone Joffrey is tired and should go rest. Joffrey is furious but finally goes with Cersei.

Once everyone leaves, Tyrion reminds Tywin the north won’t forget this, but Tywin seems to look at that as a good thing while Tyrion sees it a little differently. Tyrion heads back to tell Sansa, but her tear-streaked face clearly shows she already knows. We have to wonder if their newly forming friendship will be crushed.

Elsewhere in King’s Landing, Varys finds Shae alone. He offers her more than enough diamonds to sail overseas, buy a home, and start a new life. Varys seems to sincerely believe that Tyrion is the only person that can help save the kingdom and Shae is not only putting that at risk but putting Tyrion at risk by staying. He knows they both truly love each other, but he’s asking her to leave to protect Tyrion. Shae refuses Varys and tells him that the only way she’ll leave is if Tyrion tells her himself.

Jaime Lannister finally makes it to King’s Landing with Brienne close behind. It’s a strange moment for him because no one recognizes him and treats him like one of the lowborn. The first place he goes is to Cersei. He says her name and she expectantly turns around. At first she’s looks ecstatic, but she never stands. It doesn’t take long for Jaime to realize that all she sees is the fact that he no longer has a hand. There’s the moment where he feels crushed, again, and it’s truly sad.

Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys and her army stand outside Yunkai waiting for the people to come out to meet them. They finally do and Daenerys tells them they don’t owe her anything. Their freedom is theirs to take and no ones to give. The people eventually chant Mhysa, which means “mother.” Daenerys, goes down to walk among them at which point the chanting people pick her up and raise her on their shoulders. Jorah didn’t seem to happy with her being so far away, but in the arms of her people with her dragons flying overhead, she couldn’t have been safer.

Once again a LOT happening in one hour of television and I’m sure I missed some of it. While I was watching it I admit that I was feeling a little disappointed. After going over everything, I actually think I enjoyed this more than I realized. There were some brilliant moments between the characters and after the huge events of last week, the story needed a moment to regain its bearing. With months to go before the next episodes, we all needed a reminder of where we were and what was happening. Maybe it wasn’t as exciting a dramatic as the Red Wedding, but that’s okay. I don’t think my heart could have taken it anyway.

I’ll leave you with a few thoughts.

I never thought I’d say it but I actually found myself a little more interested in Bran’s story this week. I don’t know if it’s just because we’re running out of Starks or if it’s just starting to get its feet. They’re clearly committing on making this a major part of next season so I’m glad I’m starting to care about what happens to Bran. I wish it would have happened sooner though.

I feel so bad for Ygritte. I think she really does care about Jon Snow but I don’t think she’s ever thought Jon would betray her. I wish she could realize that he kept her from fighting with him so she would be safe. That look in her eyes when she realizes just how much she loves Jon is just the death of me.

Speaking of Ygritte, where were the rest of the Wildlings while she was hunting Jon Snow down?

Looks like Arya’s next step in life is to find a way to join up with the Faceless Men of Braavos and learn to be an assassin. That really makes me a little sad because I hate the thought of Arya living only for vengeance. After everything she’s seen I can hardly blame her, but I hate to see it come to that.

Joffrey wants to serve Robb’s severed head to Sansa at his wedding. Joffrey needs to die soon.

Tyrion’s take down of Joffrey was brilliant. So was Tywin’s reminder that anyone who has to say “I am the King” is very rarely the rightful King. I think everyone in House Lannister wants Joffrey gone. So do I. Have I mentioned that.

I’m worried about Daenerys. Things seem to be going just a little too well. I’m also worried that she may also get a little bit of a god complex. She can’t be burned by fire. She has dragons. She has a growing army completely devoted to her. Now she has a city that reveres her. I have a bad feeling things could go downhill for her next season.

I love the fact that The Hound has grown to care about Arya and I think that she’s grown to at least respect him. It’s interesting how enemies can sometimes turn to friends when you really get to know them. The same thing happened with Jaime and Brienne. Maybe The Hound and Arya can put aside their differences.

Music to Write “Weird Girls” to

As we close in on our shoot date for the Weird Girls pilot, I wanted to revisit a post I wrote once about the music I listened to when writing the scripts.

Every person has their own style and process for writing scripts. I find myself listening to a virtual soundtrack to get inspiration. It’s especially useful when I’m sitting in traffic or taking a long road trip. The music helps put me in the world and find the characters. Sometimes it even helps me break the story. I listened to a LOT of music writing season 1 and the pilot for Weird Girls.

My biggest musical obsession for Weird Girls seems to be Fever Ray and Lykke Li. No, the show is not set in Sweden. I’m just in love with what they’re doing musically. There’s one Lykke Li song called “Youth Knows No Pain” that just seems to fit my mindset for the show. Not sure I can explain that but…

I don’t think there’s an official video of the song but if you find one let me know. (I love the shot in that video.) And if you haven’t listened to much Lykke Li, you owe it to yourself to add them on your playlist.

This next Lykke Li song isn’t an “official” video, but HelloGiggles posted it on their stream and I can’t tell you how many times I watched. This one’s called “I’m Good I’m Gone.” I think it’s better than the “official” video personally.

The best thing about that video is just how happy she it. That’s how I want the kids in Weird Girls to feel.

There are some songs that go hand in hand with specific moments or episodes of the series for me. These are the songs that I’d want to have in the end credits because they so perfectly represent the episode. No spoilers but there’s a moment in Season 1 and this song always pops into my head when I get there. It’s “Judas” by Lady Gaga.

Now if I can just get Lady Gaga to give me the rights to use it in the show. We’re all little monsters here you know. Gaga, you listening? Call me.

I could go on all day but I’ll finish up going back to Scandinavia with a song by Fever Ray. It’s called “I’m Not Done.” When I was writing the season finale, this song is that one that played in my head over and over again. There’s no official video so I’ll just post this one, but if you do a search you’ll see plenty of interpretations of the song.

This is the best part of the song…

“One thing I know for certain
I’m pretty sure
It ain’t over
I’m not done”

That will make more sense once you see the season 1 finale. That is once we get it made.

We’ll be shooting the pilot episode in a few weeks and we’ll bring that to you as soon as we can. I can’t wait for you all to see it and we’re getting pretty amped about it over here. But until then, you at least have the start of a playlist. Maybe I should make a playlist and embed it here.

If you’re looking for a fun and silly book to read with your younger, future-comic-book reader, Danni’s got a suggestion. Whatever you’re looking for, writers and publishers are making more great books that are aimed directly at younger readers. They’ll do a great job establishing that love of comics and books until they get old enough to dive into the classic titles that we all know and love.
